KYU SHOTOKAN EXAM PROGRAM    

Traditional Shotokan Karate

Examination from green belt 3rd kyu to blue belt 2nd kyu (minimum tenure (12 months) in the previous grade).

The I.K.F. (International Karate Federation) has developed a program for belt (kyu) promotions; however, the Sports Club Technical Director may develop his own program. The Club Technical Director may examine, subject to the time limits, up to 1st kyu (brown belt).

Part 1: Arm Kihon:

a)- oi – tsuki + gyaku – tsuki + age – enpi (2 steps forward)

b)- soto – uke + gyaku – tsuki + mawashi – enpi (2 steps backward)

c)- jun – tsuki + gyaku – tsuki (2 steps forward)

d)- age – uke + soto – uke + (same arm), gyaku tsu (2 steps back)

e)- ura – ken – uchi + gyaku – tsuki + kizami – tsuki (2 steps forward)

f)- gedan – barai + uchi – uke + kizami – tsuki (same arm), giaku – tsuki (2 steps backwards)

2nd part:

a)- gyaku – tsuki + kizami – tsuki (2 steps forward)

b)- soto – uke + yoko – hiji – ate + ura – ken same arm (kiba – dachi ) gyaku tsuki (Z. D.) (2 steps back)

c)- gedan - barai + ura – ken – uchi + gyaku tsuki (2 steps forward)

d)- shuto – uke + kizami – geri + nukite (2 steps backwards)

e)- gyaku – tsuki + ura – ken (2 steps forward)

f)- gedan – shuto + gyaku – tsuki (2 steps backwards)

a)- mae – geri + Jun – tsuki + gyaku – tsuki

b)- yoko – geri + ura – ken uchi + gyaku - tsuki

c)- mawashi – geri + gyaku – tsuki + kizami – tsuki

d)- ushiro – geri + ura k- ken – uchi + gyaku – tsuki

e)- ura – mawashi - geri + gyaku tsuki + ura – ken

f)- shi – ho + gyaku – tsuki:

left and right starting with the left leg

c) Tori: (the one performing the technique) gedan - barai backward + advance oi - tsuki - chudan

d) Uke: (the one receiving the technique) backward soto - uke + gyaku - tsuki

e) Tori: (the one performing the technique) gedan - barai backward + advance oi - tsuki - chudan

f) Uke: (the one receiving the technique) backward uchi - uke + gyaku - tsuki

g) Tori : (the person performing the technique) gedan - barai backward + advance mae - geri

h)- Uke : (the person receiving the technique) backward gedan - barai + gyaku - tsuki

i)- Tori : (the person performing the technique) gedan - barai backward + advance mawashi - geri

l)- Uke : (the person receiving the technique) backward ude - uke + gyaku - tsuki

m)- Tori : (the person performing the technique) gedan - barai backward + advance yoko - geri

n)- Uke : (the person receiving the technique) backward uchi - uke + gyaku - tsuki

o)- Tori : (the person performing the technique) gedan - barai backward + advance ushiro - geri

p)- Uke : (the person receiving the technique) backward soto - uke + gyaku - tsuki

Part 6: JIYU IPPON KUMITE:

Tori: (the one who executes the technique) (attacks by declaring the technique)

Jodan attack + Chudan attack

a)- mae-geri + yoko-geri

Uke: (the one receiving the technique) (defends in go no sen)

Part 7: HEJO (strategy):

GO - NO - SEN: uke defends by blocking and counterattacking (in two stages)

TAI - NO - SEN: uke defends by blocking and counterattacking simultaneously

SEN - NO - SEN: uke defends without blocking, anticipating the attack with a counterattack
